Happy Frostmas!! 🥶

The growing season is (mostly) over. We had a killing frost come through this morning that wiped out our annuals. It’s definitely bittersweet, but I’m looking forward to slowing down and planning for next season.

This season has been a favorite so far and I believe it is because of the @missouriflowerexchange.

Getting to know these 8 other local farmers has been the highlight of my season. Can’t wait to see what next year holds! 🤩

Happy Friday! ✨

Read on for the last of our tips for growing loads of Dahlias!! 👇

6️⃣ Picking dahlias at the appropriate time is crucial. 💐 The best time to harvest your dahlias for the longest vase life is when the first layer of pedals are lifting up from the center. This will also prevent the bugs from chomping too much of your bloom.

7️⃣ Continue to harvest and deadhead your plants until the first frost, for continual blooms. ✂️

8️⃣ After a frost, dig up those tubers on your favorite varieties to store over winter in your garage. ✅ If you leave them in the field, they will freeze and thaw and turn to mush.

3️⃣ During those droughty summer weeks, water your dahlias a couple times a week. However, you don’t want it wet or the tubers might rot. The general rule is to water less at the end of spring/beginning of summer, but water more often at the end of July/beginning of August. 💦

4️⃣ If you feel like you need to fertilize your plants, only do so in the 1st or 2nd month of growth. It could prevent your plants from starting to bloom if you continue to apply fertilizer all season. 🌱

5️⃣ You may need to bag your dahlias with organza bags if you have a bug situation. 🪲 Or, you might be lazy like me, and just prefer growing many more dahlia plants than you need. 🙃
